School of Human Cultures
|
Reemphasizing the
“local” in human culture
Shiga, with its
treasure trove of history and culture, is used as teaching
material for students to acquire comprehensive understanding
and practical power of judgment concerning various social
phenomena relating to human life and culture. Study focuses on
the exploration of all aspects of human culture, through
observation of the “Community,” the basic milieu of human
life, and the rapidly changing “lifestyle” of modern
society. The School of Human Cultures consists of
four departments. The Department of Regional Studies conducts
education and studies in the cultures of Japan and Asia, as
well as the history of Ohmi (Shiga Prefecture), which has been
a cross-road of communication with East Asia from ancient
ages. The other three departments, The Department of Living
Design, the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, and the
Department of Human Relations, aim to study human life styles
from the viewpoints of clothing, food, housing and human
relationships to understand the concept of quality of life
(QOL). At each department, various approaches are
taken from cultural, social and natural sciences in order to
assist students in understanding human life fully and
obtaining the academic background for creating a new human
lifestyle. Through firsthand experience about
community culture and everyday culture, including the cultural
assets and folk traditions of the areas around Lake Biwa,
students acquire a sure perception of the “Community” and
“lifestyle,” a perspective that will enable them to take up
regional studies on Japan or Asia.
